Open-Source Kubernetes Resource Review Mixin
Standard Kubernetes dashboards suffer from a massive engineering blind spot: the moment a container crashes, updates, or scales down, its ephemeral data vanishes or turns into a blank gap. Traditional tools also aggregate metrics into broad workload averages, which completely masks individual container failures, silent CPU throttling, or memory leaks in rolling updates.
To solve this, CloudBolt teamed up with Learnk8s to build the Kubernetes Resource Review Mixin. This free, open-source diagnostic pack gives platform engineers and DevOps teams the granular, historical evidence needed to safely rightsize workloads without lagging their monitoring infrastructure.
Key Technical Capabilities
- Identity-Backed Metrics: Uses custom Prometheus recording rules to securely lock metrics to the structural identity of your workloads (Namespace, Revision, and Pod UID). Your historical paper trail is fully preserved even after a container restarts or gets OOMKilled.
- Instant Historical Queries: Eliminates dashboard lag. By pre-calculating heavy mathematical rate() functions in the background every 15 seconds, 30-day historical charts load instantaneously instead of timing out Grafana.
- Invisible Bottleneck Detection: Explicitly tracks background container pressure and CPU throttled-period percentages (container_cpu_cfs_throttled_seconds_total) so you can catch performance choking that standard CPU percentage averages miss.
- Zero-Friction Local Testing: Includes a built-in development playground. Run a single command (make dev) to spin up a local Kind cluster with pre-configured sample workloads to see the dashboard in action in under 5 minutes.
