Q: What is private and public cloud computing?

A: IT uses private and public cloud computing to develop, test, and run applications used to support business activities as well as revenue-generating applications and services. Today’s computing environments for both private and public clouds run virtualization technologies for almost every aspect of computing, storage, and networking and run on an underlying infrastructure of real physical hardware hosted in a private or publicly hosted data center.

Cloud computing is simply running digital assets in an environment that is not hosted by infrastructure local to the users of the assets. The computing runs somewhere else in a private or public network but can be accessed by a network connection. Connections can be secured so that only specific users with the right credentials can access the computing environment even when it is hosted in a public cloud.
